I was in at the start, when it was decided to create a wildlife habitat
demonstration area at the Royal Show Ground at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, many years ago.
We created ponds, woodland, hedgerows, ditches, scrubland, and a wild flower meadow. I also set up a
travelling freshwater exhibit which was on display in the conservation centre. I spent a very happy
ten years setting up the display and being present during the four days of the show each July.
I also took the freshwater display around the country to all the main agricultural shows. During
those years I met some interesting people, as you can see below.

LAMBETH PALACE
I also had the pleasure of meeting the then Archbishop of
Canterbury, Dr. Robert Runcie, whilst working at the Royal Show. He said his wife would like a
wildlife garden in the grounds of Lambeth Palace. I agreed, and of course my bosses thought this a
great PR opportunity for English Nature
I spent a very happy two weeks there, staying in the
Runcies flat in the Palace. It just so happened that my stay co - incided with a state visit by the
Patriarch of Constantinople. It was an interesting time to say the least !
